Absolutely every "liberal" organization wants money from me. Please note that I am an 80 year-old prof emeritus who was never rich. I ardently defend all humanist and humanitarian causes, free health care and free education that most European countries have had ever since Bismarck (who was very conservative but knew that workers must be respected as human beings in order to work well, and I am therefore also in strong support of their unions. The victims of 9/11 rare now regarded as "heroes" although the Bush administration used that tragic even to diminish the rights of US citizens even further. Thanks to war mongers (like Cheney and Coindi Rice who sponsored torture) and the Supreme Court's support for G.W. Bush's rise to "Emperor of the World", our Constitution has become worthless. My country is no longer a real democracy. "Condi" claimed that China was spending too much money on the military. This country of ours spends more on these professional killers that all other counties combined. So why do we always pick on other nations as not being as good as we claim to be ? Let us clean up our own house and bring our Constitution back to life! Conrad - CA

The events of September 11, 2001 gave most Americans a cause to be proud: we came together in the face of a great threat and terrible tragedy to help and protect each other. Today, we are facing an even greater threat and an even more terrible threat than we could have imagined on that painful day. Ten years ago, we told the greatest threat we had ever faced that we would not be cowed into having our freedom curtailed by their actions. Today, we must tell a new threat to our freedom the same thing. Today, we face politicians who would rather stand by their party's more extreme members than help those who are suffering. Today, we face politicians who would rather tell us we are safe than tell us we are free. Today, we face politicians who would rather use a terrible event to threaten us with what could happen to us than use that terrible event to show us what we can do to help each other. Ten years ago, many people died. Shortly after that, our freedom began to die. Until our freedom is completely dead, we must and will fight for our freedom from tyranny; both foreign and domestic. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation. -MLK Michael - NY
Our unity has been tested in the fire over the last 10 years, and we have shown ourselves more than able to rise to the challenge of defending equal rights and justice for all (cf. gay marriage now legal in 6 states). We must continue to fight against the forces that dare to divide and conquer us through fear and intolerance. William - MA

They are all Vietnam veterans. The gradual assimilation of Vietnam into acceptable popular mythology, which began solemnly with The Deer Hunter, has reached its culmination with The A-Team: No longer a memory to be hurriedly brushed aside, but heroes of a network adventure show. Their enemy is a comic army officer, Col. Lynch, see Sgt. Bilko, see Beetle Bailey, see M*A*S*H, whose pursuit of our heroes is doomed to slapstick failure. This is classic right-wing American populism; patriotic, macho, anti-authority, and is unlikely to be understood in Britain, where to be right-wing implies an obsequiousness towards officers and the status quo. But right-wing this series certainly is. The bandits, it turns out, are in league with a group of sinister guerrillas who are trying to destabilise the country. Thanks to the A-Team's hearts and minds policy, the villagers rise up and put them to rout, in a 20-minute series of comic-book battle scenes, over-turning cars and airplane stunt-tricks, in which not a single person is hurt.

Hemingway remained in Europe for 10 months traveling with the Allied infantry into the Hürtgenwald forest as they "cracked" the Siegfried Line. At war's end, Hemingway was back in Cuba. In light of American use of the atomic bomb, he reminded his fellow countrymen that "For the moment we are the strongest power in the world. It is important that we do not become the most hated." To avoid such a fate, he said, "we need to study and understand certain basic problems of our world as they were before Hiroshima to be able to continue, intelligently, to discover how some of them have changed and how they can be settled justly now that a new weapon has become the property of the world. We must study them more carefully than ever now and remember that no weapon has ever settled a moral problem. It can impose a solution but it cannot guarantee it to be a just one."
